On Wednesday evening the Fish will be looking to build on the first win of the season with a tricky away game at table toppers AFC Croydon Athletic. Kevin Rayner’s men have gone on a 4 game winning streak which see them sitting at the summit of the Southern Counties East Premier Division after 5 fixtures, which means Gary and the team will need to be at their best to come away from the Mayfield Stadium with the points.
After losing at 3-0 away at Whitstable Town on the opening day of the season the Rams have looked like a team transformed, with their ascent to the top of the league coming via a 1-3 win at Tunbridge Wells, 0-1 away to Canterbury City, a 3-0 victory in their only home game of the campaign against Erith & Belvedere and a 1-2 triumph away at Crowborough Athletic last weekend seeing Croydon Athletic amass their 12 points.
The clear danger man during this run has been ex-Clapton striker Warren Mfula, who has netted 4 times in the league, alongside 2 goals in the cup exit against Colliers Wood United. Alongside Mfula, Chevan Xavier popped up with his first of the season last weekend, and midfielder Bradley Wilson has looked creative and already has one goal to his name.
Last season AFC Croydon Athletic finished 9 points ahead of Fisher in 11th. It was 3-0 to the Rams in the corresponding fixture at the Mayfield Stadium last season (not that it dampened the spirits of a very vocal away following that day!), with a 1-1 at Champion Hill that saw Chan Quan score and Frazer Bent see red.
There are a few options for getting to Mayfield Stadium (CR7 6DN). If you’re on the train, you can either head to East Croydon, then catch the 198 to Thornton Heath; go to West Croydon then take the 289 to Peall Road; or if you fancy a ride on the tram get the train to Mitcham Junction then the tram to Therapia Lane.
