Gary – Let’s keep up the momentum. Fisher 5 – 2 Lydd Town

Fisher made it back-to-back cup wins at St Paul’s on Saturday, with a dominant second half display ensuring progress in the Kent Reliance Senior Trophy against Lydd Town by 5 goals to 2. After a fairly even first half the sides went in level at 2-2, with the Fish opening the scoring via a Lydd own goal in the sixth minute following a strong move down the right wing. Lydd dangerman James Everrit levelled things from the spot on 20 minutes, before that man again Trey Williams opened his account for the day with a sharp finish in the 6 yard box on 35. Just before the break the visitors deservedly got themselves back in the game, an Ahmetat shot pinballing off Fisher bodies to beat Davy.

Gary Abbott was justifiably concerned once again about the goals conceeded, if nothing else because the Fish could have done more with the ball in the lead up to both – “It’s good to get two wins in a week, a shame I couldn’t keep the same side as Tuesday but injuries have stopped that today. I’m very disappointed with the two goals we let in, they both came from sloppy play. We are still giving the ball away in silly areas and not releasing it quick enough, we want that extra touch when it’s got to be passed earlier. I’m sure if we moved the ball quicker we would have scored more goals than we did today, once a striker makes his move it’s got to be played through to him as soon as he’s gone.”

After the break the Fish stepped up a gear, with the gap in quality starting to show as the home side took control. Four minutes into the second period skipper Scott Wason up from the back for a set piece curled a beauty into the top corner from outside the box on the right flank. Following a brief Lydd fightback Trey Williams bagged his second goal after 72, before completing his hat-trick in the 88th minute.

Abbo was full of praise for some individual performances, though did worry about a bit of attitude sneaking in as the game wore one – “Spencer Forte and Joel Mensah in the middle of the park have done really well again. We’ve seen Alfie Roche come in and do a job at right back, with young Darius moving to left back. Scott Wason and Joe Wadman at the back looked shaky in first half but grew into the game and look much better in second half, with Scott scoring with a great strike. We had some great chances to finish them off with Trey scoring a hat-trick but he could have had six! In the second half some of our players have, in my opinion, started taking the mick out of them by trying to do tricks with ball rather than passing it quicker which ultimately has resulted in Spencer getting sent off at the death. I asked Spencer why he got sent off and he said his head hit their player’s shoulder and the referee sent him off for using his head. I’ve not got a problem with the decision, whatever you do you don’t use your head; our issue now is that we will miss him for the 2/3 games he will get for it but we will get on with it. My main thing to say for today though is that we have got to be more clinical in front of goal, even thou we scored five.”

Once again Abbo was taken aback by the noise coming from the fans behind the goal at the Dockers End, rounding up his team at full time to go and thank the fans for their support. “I just thought I had to get the boys to give supporters a clap today as they don’t stop singing, what a great bunch to have behind us, also after letting 6 goals in last week with a disappointing and embarrassing second half. Now it’s back to a league game next Saturday with another home game and a real six pointer against Deal Town, a must win game. Hopefully these two wins pushes us on, let’s keep up the momentum and positive atmsophere to get those 3 points we so need and starting moving up the table.”

The Fish are back at home on this weekend, taking on Deal Town in a foot of the table six pointer on Saturday 22 October. As previously announced, the Deal Town game will be Fisher Community Day, with the club inviting down a host of local schools and charities to join us for the day. It’s bring a friend to St Paul’s day, with an offer of two adult tickets for just £10. The good news is that the Clubhouse Bar will be back open properly, serving locally brewed Fourpure Brewing Co. beers once again. We are calling on all supporters to pack St Paul’s and get behind the team in this crucial SCEFL Premier Division match.
