Fisher continued their winning run and kept up the momentum of their play off push, but it took a dramatic last gasp winner from Festos Kamara to finally see off Holmesdale in a five goal thriller. Fisher made two changes from Tuesday’s win with Tom Jones returning from illness to replace the suspended Sha’mar Lawson and Charles Yiadom Konadu replacing Flavio Jumo, who dropped to the bench.
With seventeen goals flying in during the last three games, goals were expected, and a furious start to the game didn’t disappoint. With Holmesdale possessing a potent long throw, their main threat came from set plays, and whilst Isaac Ogunseri came to claim the first torpedo launched into the box, the second, on seven minutes, saw him stay and the ball flicked off a mass of heads jumping together with it impossible to tell if it came off the Holmesdale centre back or a Fisher defender as a silenced St Pauls saw it drop in at the near post. Fisher were level in a matter of minutes. Opting for the more aesthetically pleasing short throws to feet, Rafael Garcia and Jack Gibbons worked the ball to Charles Yiadom Konadu on the corner of the penalty area. A quick switch of feet allowed him to fire off a left footed shot that looked to be comfortable for the keeper but somehow squirmed through his hands and into the far corner to level the game up. The goal buoyed Fisher and they set about attacking the visitors goal with relish, with Garcia on the right a constant menace to the Holmesdale back line. Kamara saw a header fly over after some wizardry from Yiadom Konadu made space for a cross. Alex Kozak then cut in from the left only to see his dipping shot crash off the crossbar and bounce away to safety. Midway through the half Fisher took the lead, as patient build up on the right allowed Jack Gibbons to make space and clip over an inch perfect cross for left back, Lorenzo Duncan, to meet sliding into the six yard box and flick the ball past the keeper for his fifteenth goal of the season, ten of which have come whilst playing at left back. Fisher continued to press, with Duncan flicking an effort just over and Kozak denied by fine save by the keeper before on the stroke of half time Kamara was given a great chance to add to the lead after Garcia’s low cross found him in space twelve yards out, but he leant back on his effort, and it flew over the bar.
On a different day Fisher could well have come out for the second half already four goals to the good, but somehow that two goal cushion they craved had not come and the second half was not to prove any more fruitful, despite some relentless attacking play. Yiadom Konadu and Kozak both opened up the Holmesdale back line but saw their efforts blocked at the near post or hit the side netting and Tom Jones cut in to find space for a low shot that was well held by Wealands in the Holmesdale goal. Kozak and Yiadom Konadu were again both denied low at the near post and having spurned such dominance there was an air of inevitably as with ten minutes to play Holmesdale sent a long ball forward that wasn’t dealt with and allowed Lewis Heyward to clip the ball over the advancing Ogunseri and stun St Pauls with a leveller. Fisher set about trying to restore their lead, but when Jack Gibbons saw his free header just pass over the bar after he rose to meet a late corner it looked like they might have to settle for a point. Even that seemed uncertain when late in injury time Holmesdale won a free kick on the edge of the box, but the kick was cleared after hitting their own player and Fisher tore up field. Kamara cut inside and as he looked to get a shot away that flew wide the referee awarded a free kick for unsporting behaviour from a defender apparently shouting at the frontman as he set to shoot. With the Dockers End urging Fisher to get the ball in the box, Jones delivered deep and Don Macaulay ghosted in at the back pots to square the ball for Festos Kamara to stretch every sinew in his legs to make contact at the back post near post and steer the ball home sparking huge celebrations between players and fans. There was barely time for the restart before the final whilst securing the vital three points for the play off places push.
