Larkfield & New Hythe 0-0 Fisher
Saturday 18th April
SCEFL Premier Division
Attn: 170
A battling Fisher performance earned them the point from a goalless draw at third placed Larkfield and New Hythe to confirm a second placed finish and with it home advantage in the play off matches. Fisher freshened up the starting eleven after Tuesday’s loss at Punjab United with Michael Saprong, Alex Kozak and Lorenzo Duncan all returning after being rested as they again set about tackling a difficult bumpy playing surface. There were some familiar faces amongst the opposition with former Fish Courtney Barringoton, Kesna Clarke and Sam Fitzgerald all lining up for the hosts.
Fisher started the game well putting some early pressure on the Larkfield goal with Festos Kamara almost catching the keeper out when nipping to steal the ball and getting hauled down as he looked to get away, earning the keeper an early caution. The resulting free kick though was hammered into the wall and for the immediate counter saw the host waste a good chance with the ball not quite falling for Clarke to get his shot away cleanly. Midway through the half Fisher could have fallen behind but Isaac Ogunseri pulled off a superb double save to deny Barrington and Black with their close range efforts. The surface was causing both sides problems and fluent play was hard to achieve with the game becoming more of an attritional battle for second balls and bits and pieces in midfield punctuated by the odd hopeful through ball over the top for eager runners of both sides. Alex Kozak was the one player looking more able to cope with the conditions and a coupe of good runs down the left saw crosses come over but without finding a Fisher head. It was not a surprise that he half time whistle came with the game still without a goal and there was a feeling that it would take a mistake from either side to unlock the game with build-up play so tricky.
The second half saw the game open up a little, partly due to reduced numbers on the hour mark as Jahmal Howlett-Mundle out on a rash tackle to half Tom Jones surging run out of his own half and after a long time to consider the referee brandished a red card. Despite being a man down it was Larkfield looking the more, likely perhaps being the side needing the three points more, rather than the one that would meet Fisher’s needs and the Fisher back line started to have to absorb more pressure with balls sent low and hard into the Fisher box from either flank fizzing across the face of the goal. Larkfield’s dead ball play though was often over hit taking off some of the pressure, with a number of deep corners and free kicks drifting well past the far post,
With fifteen minutes to play the numbers were evened up as a difficult bounce caught Conor Darwish out and with the forward getting the wrong side of him a tangle between the two saw a free kick awarded and Darwish dismissed for the denial of a goal scoring opportunity. The subsequent free kick saw Ogunseri pull off a fabulous one handed save low to his right to tip the well struck ball around the post and minutes later he raced from his goal to make another excellent save smothering the effort from Clarke has the prolific former Fisher frontman had raced into the box.
Having had to dig deep at the back, the closing stages saw Fisher start to look like they might nick a winner. A quick break down the left from Jake Lovell saw him set the ball back centrally for Flavio Jumo fifteen yards out but his curling measured effort was clawed away one handed for a corner by Collins in the Larkfield goal. From the corner Don Macaulay also tried to find the top corner as the ball broke to him but his audacious effort drifted just wide. Several substitutions further broke up the extended added time during which the game became scrappier with both sides thumping clearances as far away form their own goal as they could often troubling the nearby gardens more than the respective defences before the final whistle signalled the point Fisher craved.
