Punjab United 2-1 Fisher
Tuesday 14th April
SCEFL Premier Division

Attn: 151
Scorer: Flavio Jumo (53 min)

Fisher’s pursuit of second spot in the league was dealt a blow as they slipped to a narrow 2-1 defeat at fellow play off aspirants Punjab United in Gravesend, although results elsewhere on the evening did at least confirm Fisher’s current points tally would be sufficient to confirm involvement in the end of season play offs.
With games coming thick and fast at the business end of the season, Fisher rung the changes for the game with Peter Ojemen, Donald Macaulay, Jake Lovell, Flavio Jumo all coming into the starting line up along with Tom Jones who missed Saturday’s win against Snodland Town, at the expense of the rested Jack Gibbons, Lorenzo Duncan, Chibueze Echem, Michael Sarpong  and unavailable Alex Kozak.
Playing down the slope Fisher fell into the trap of overhitting many of the through balls with a hard playing surface adding a difficult bounce for both sides, with several skewed clearances and failures to control contributing to a poor spectacle. One of these difficult bounces almost created an opener for the hosts with the ball nodded towards the back post where a following in forward just failed to get a decisive touch as it skimmed wide, with Ogunseri beaten. At the other end it took a fine diving save on the goal line from Beeney to deny a bullet header from Festos Kamara after Tom Jones had sent in a well flighted free kick, with the ball somehow smuggled away for a corner from the resulting scramble. Don Macualy also saw a header pass just over the bar as he met another good dead ball delivery into the box. Midway through the half though Fisher’s promising start was undone as some hesitant defending of a high ball allowed it to be lobbed through to Lee Bird at the left side of the area and he planted a firm shot across Ogunseri into the opposite corner for a well taken finish to put the hosts ahead. Fisher looked to regroup but their approach play was too rushed and too long with the side not seeming to back themselves on the surface to apply their usual pattern of play with the high balls through to Kamara picked off by the Punjab back line as Fisher attacks lacked sufficient width.
The second spell saw Fisher start well and make greater use of wide areas, with Jake Lovell becoming an increasing influence, although Punjab squandered the first chance of the half when a quick break gave a shooting opportunity that was sent wide. On fifty three minutes though Fisher levelled, with a goal more in keeping with their usual style of play. After some neat triangles to keep possession around the back Don Macaulay was able to advance and clip a sublime through ball down the corridor of uncertainty between full back and centre half which Flavio Jumo read to perfection to race through and then as he burst into the penalty area coped with an alarming bobble to thrash a blistering  half volley which beat Beeney for pace inside his near post. The goal should have settled Fisher down but rather than use it as a platform for a more measured approached they continued the rushed play of the first half. They paid the price five minutes later when Punjab regained the lead. A carelessly given away free kick on halfway saw a ball delivered high into the box and whilst half cleared, the ball was lobbed back in finding an unmarked Harry Ottaway as Fisher were slow out and failing to scan to pick up as they went, with his looping header back across goal dropping in at the far post.
Having got back into the game once Fisher set about trying again, including the unusual sight of bringing on all five substitutes virtually at once around the seventieth minute. Whilst there was plenty of industry for the remaining twenty minutes, there was insufficient quality and it was only in the dying embers of the game that Fisher wally got the ball down and run at the back line which caused far more problems than the previous eighty five minutes had seen. However, throwing players forward left gaps at the back and it took a fine save from Ogunseri to deny Punjab a third as they broke two on one deep in injury time. Fisher continued to push forward, with substitute Jacob Katonia looking lively, but a determined defensive display from their hosts kept them at distance and saw Fisher fall to just their eight defeat of the campaign.
