Corinthian 6 - 1 Fisher
Saturday 18 August 2012 - 15:00

It was a hugely disappointing trip to Corinthian for the Fish, who came away soundly beaten and had keeper Danny Firkins to thanks for restricting the home to side to six goals.

The Fish were never at the races in this one, played in searing heat, and they lost Adam Wadmore to a red card shortly before halftime. The performance left manager Steve Firkins fuming and changes are likely for the derby match with Beckenham on Bank Holiday Monday 28th August.

Fisher actually made a fairly bright start to the game, but it didn’t last long and Corinthian opened the scoring following the first of many defensive howlers. Ben Frempah missed a clearing head which allowed Adam Marsh a free run on goal, and he slotted past Danny Firkins. Marsh should have doubled the lead but he missed from six yards out when it seemed easier to score. The second didn’t take long in arriving though, Jamie Taylor making the most of Fisher’s all-at-sea defending.

Fisher were in complete disarray at this stage, and it was all Corinthian. Firkins made a miracle save to keep the game at 2-0, and from the resulting break Fisher pulled a goal back. It was an excellent move, a Ramsamy run and cross to Greg Wickenden, who laid the ball back to Sean Brown for a firm, placed finish and his first goal for the club.

And incredibly Fisher could have drawn level just minutes later, a Wadmore piledriver crashing against the post and Steve O’Donnell firing teh rebound over the bar. Corinthian soon re-asserted their dominance however and Firkins had to make another incredible save – although this time the home side had gained a clear advantage from an offside that was missed in the build-up.

Fisher knew it wasn’t to be their day as Corinthian were awarded a soft penalty – Brown having jumped to win the ball in the box found himself landing on a home player who had not made a jump, the referee judging this to be an infringement by the Fisher player. Fisher’s enquiries as to why the penalty were given earned captain Wadmore a yellow card, and Marsh despatched the penalty to put Corinthian 3-1 up.

Shortly before half-time, Wadmore’s frustration got the better of him and he earned a second yellow – about which there can be no complaints – as he hauled a Corinthian player to the floor in midfield.

Corinthian added a fourth immediately after half-time, Firkins unsighted and wrong-footed by an Alfie May curler. The Fish continued to look for a consolation, and Rob Depeazer header over after Ramsamy got to the byline to cross. But two further goals meant Corinthian ended up runaway winners, and Fisher were left to wonder just what had gone wrong.
