Kent Senior Trophy First Round

Attn:
Scorer: Temi Alaka (27 min)

Fisher edged into the second round of the Kent Senior Trophy after a tight single goal win over Hollands & Blair at Star Meadow thanks to Temi Alaka’s sixth goal of the season. Fisher gave a debut to James Batt in goal and there were welcomed returns, after holiday, for James Bessey Saldanha and after injury for Charles Yiadom Konadu who put in a masterclass of possession football in midfield constantly switching play and moving the ball around with pinpoint precision.
Fisher started well, seeing plenty of ball but clear chances were few and far between with Kaylam Burgess forcing the first save to the keeper’s left when not quite getting the connection he wanted on a hooked shot. Blair showed their intent with pacy wingers causing issues for the Fisher back line down both flanks, and a dangerous low cross flashed across the Fisher six yard box. In return Fisher’s pace was causing the hosts problems as Alaka and Garcia both looked to get in behind a high Blair back line.
Midway through the half Fisher thought they had taken the lead having worked a short corner on the left Bessey Saldanha was played back in down the flank and cut in to drill the ball across goal where Festos Kamara swooped to turn the ball home from close range. However, as they peeled away to celebrate a very late offside flag went up despite both contributing players looking to have timed their runs well. It was to matter little though as five minutes later Fisher found the net again with the flag staying this down this down as Kamara was sent clear into the Blair half from Kaylam Burgess’ clip forward and surging into he box he drew Ellis, the Blair keeper out of position before unselfishly rolling the ball inside for Temi Alaka to compose himself with a touch and then slam the ball past the retreating defenders into the net.
Blair looked to get back level but James Batt was having an impressive debut punching or claiming everything thrown into the box as Fisher coped with the omnipresent threat from the two lively wingers. Fisher almost added a second after a good passing move saw Garcia’s looped header finger tipped over the bar, and from the corner Bessey Saldanha saw a rasping drive deflected just wide.
The second half saw Fisher refuse to sit back and left back Kaylam Burgess continued to press forward and was slipped in by Garcia but saw his shot drift wide of the far post. The game became scrappy, but that suited Fisher, stopping it from becoming too open and allowing them to preserve their lead.  Charles Yiadom Konadu almost doubled Fisher’s advantage with some sorcery on the edge of the box switching the ball onto his right and slamming the ball high up against the post with the keeper well beaten and a surging run from Alaka saw substitute Euan Mutale unable to get a shot away, with a defender’s hand flicking the bouncing ball out of his path unnoticed by most.
A number of crunching tackles on Kamara and Garcia saw bookings for Blair and kept Fisher high up the pitch. With Fisher seemingly in control at times their hosts spent more effort on contesting marginal decisions on halfway or throw in decisions rather than attacking the Fisher goal and it was only in the late stages that the really mustered any sustained pressure on the Fisher goal. However, having not kept a clean sheet this season Fisher looked determined to correct this record and safe handling from Batt and some committed defending with blocks and tackles around the box Fisher saw the game out well and put themselves into the second round draw.
