Despite making eight changes from Saturday’s FA Vase win Fisher cruised through to the third round of the SCEFL Challenge Cup with a comprehensive 4-1 win over Beckenham Town. Only Don Macaulay, James Bessey-Saldanha and James Batt remained in the starting line up as Fisher ruthlessly showed their squad depth, with little let up to their fluent attacking style of play.
Fisher started brightly and should have taken the lead inside five minutes when Tyrese Briscoe’s power saw him burst into the box but Beckenham keeper Tom Crunp saved well at his feet and Rafa Garcia follow up effort was blocked by a retreating defender. Eden Deh also has an early change to open the scoring but his powerful shot having been released down the right was tipped onto the crossbar by Crump. The opening goal arrived on eleven minutes, but completely against the run of play went to Beckenham as Ade Ajagbe slipped inside from the left channel an profited from a fortuitous rebound from a half tackle to then neatly lift the ball over Batt as he slid in front of him to smoother.
Despite going behind Fisher stayed in their stride and continued to press forward with Eden Deh seeing another good shot beaten away and several dangerous balls flashing across the six yard box without finding a final touch. On twenty eight minutes though the leveller came. James Bessey-Saldanha found space in midfield and with a drop of the shoulder left his marker behind and strode deep into the Beckenham half before slipping an inch perfect ball between centre and full back, into the path of Eden Deh’s run, inviting him to slam it into the top corner giving Crump no chance with the emphatic finish into the roof of the net. Fisher strived to go in front before the break, with Bessey- Saldanha and Deh both opening up Beckenham down the right with powerful runs along the byline, but a Briscoe header just over and a series of corners were as close as they came.
It did not take long in the second spell though for Fisher to take control. Four minutes into he half they won a free kick on the edge of the box and Rafael Garcia stepped up to drive the ball low and hard around the wall and into the bottom far corner. The lead allowed Fisher to play some champagne football as they pushed forward with exciting attacking play, hungry for more goals to warm the fans huddled in the Dockers End on a cold autumnal night. The pace of full backs Gabriel Darby and Ali Taylor-Kamara was proving a thorn for Beckenham and with Flavio Jumo pulling strings in midfield, spreading play with every opportunity a third goal looked in the offing and duly arrived as Fisher’s press stole possession inside the Beckenham half and after a series of blocked shots and rebounds inside the area as Jumo tried to dance through several tackles, the ball broke to substitute Euan Mutale who notched his eighth of the season, hooking home on the turn.
Fisher looked to turn the screw and six minutes later had a fourth as Tyrese Briscoe was felled by a clumsy challenge when looking to turn in the box and he picked himself up to emphatically slam home the penalty for a deserved goal. Now in complete control Fisher showed no letting up in their attacking intent. Taylor-Kamara saw a fine run and shot saved low down by crump and substitutes Mekhi Clarke and Temi Alaka both threatened to get in behind the Beckenham back line with a couple of close offside calls favouring the visitors. However there were to be no further goals despite plenty of further Fisher attacks and the final whistle saw safe passage through into the last sixteen of the SCEFL Challenge Cup and ensure there will be a busy winter of cup football for Fisher, with the FA Vase, Kent Senior Trophy and London Senior Cup campaigns all still alive.
