Fisher followed up last week’s London Senior Cup heroics with victory over mid table Tunbridge Wells at Champion Hill.
The Fish began with great purpose pinning the visitor’s back in their own half for the first twenty minutes producing wave after wave of attacks. With barely 30 seconds on the club, returning former skipper Cedric Abraham combined well with strike partner Luke Coleman but the latter’s initial touch was poor allowing Slovakian keeper Michael Czanner to smoother the ball at the forwards feet. Barely a minute later Gary Lisney’s side took the lead. Winger Rafael Akala latched on to a Bryan Glover pass and unchallenged was allowed to smash the ball from 25 yards past the static Czanner.
The Fish with their tails up continued to threaten. An Abraham flick sent Coleman clear down the left channel with just the keeper to beat but the resulting shot clipped the inside of the post and somehow stayed out which enabled the recovering Wells back line to scramble the ball to safety. It mattered not however as Coleman made up for the miss with a well taken goal on 12 minutes. The visitor’s failed to clear their lines from a corner and Fisher’s number 10 was allowed to turn in the box and find the bottom corner.
Well’s shell-shocked by the early onslaught began to find a foothold in the game as the half progressed. Tonbridge enjoyed a greater amount of possession without ever really threatening Adam Lisney in the Fisher goal. However on 44 minutes Tonbridge were given a lifeline when the referee judged Lloyd Boateng pulled Benji Agana’s shirt in the box. Andy McMath made no mistake sweeping the ball home from the spot.
In the second period the Fish were content to sit back and protect their lead whilst attempting to hit the away side on the break.
Declan Thompson, signed last week from Barnet, replaced Akala on 60 minutes. The new signing almost scored his first goal for the club on 75 minutes. Good work by Elstrom Die on the right wing resulted in a fine centre to the edge of the area. Thompson’s turn and stunning volley had Czanner beaten but once again the post came to Well’s rescue. Five minutes later, Lisney was called into action parrying well from a McMath volley but mostly the Fisher stopper had a relatively quiet afternoon as Fisher earned all the points in an entertaining clash.
