A brace by Halusi Mustafa, including an injury time winner, brought some much needed Christmas cheer to the Fish.
After Saturday’s poor defeat away at Sporting Bengal, manager Gary Lisney agreed to a last minute fixture re-arrangement away at local rivals Beckenham Town.
Jason Huntley’s side – in desperate need of a game in the run up to their crunch FA Vase match against Kings Lynn Town at the weekend – were without a fixture since the 20th November and it showed. The Fish looked sharper from the off and dominated the midfield in the early exchanges.
Lisney switched to a 4-4-2 formation with returning forward Elstrom Die partnering Dexter Babalola up front. After 13 minutes the away side took the lead with their first real attack. Full back Mark Lewis was allowed time to pick his spot from the wing and Mustafa leaped to head the ball over a stranded Nick Blue and register his first for the evening.
Fisher, not content to sit on their lead, pushed on and carved out three further openings but all efforts were hit directly at Blue who comfortably saved.
After the break, Beckenham looked a different proposition and took the game to Fish. The visitor’s were content to soak up the pressure and possibly hit their hosts on the break as the game became stretched. However Town managed to get on level terms with 10 minutes left, Dave Waters ghosted in to nod home at the far post leaving Adam Lisney with no chance.
The small Fish faithful who made the last minute dash to Eden Park Avenue feared the worst but Fisher’s response was nothing short of fantastic. A 30 yard George Savage free kick had Nick Blue at full stretch, the keeper could only parry into the direction of Elstrom Die who looked to be felled by the on rushing keeper but the referee waved play on despite strong appeals.
Savage continued to look threatening and was played through with five left by Steve Sallis but the lively winger was unable to slip the ball past Blue
who saved with his legs.
With just seconds left on the clock, Beckenham gained a corner and threw too many forward. The ball was easily cut out at the near post by Mark Lewis who immediately sent Die forward on a foreging run. The tricky forward beat his marker before playing a perfectly weighted through ball for the galloping Mustafa to slot home and earn Fisher an excellent win.
