On Wednesday evening, Millwall sent a development squad to Champion Hill and a record crowd of 263 were treated to a very good game of football between two sides looking to keep it on the floor. Millwall dominated the opening exchanges, with much of the play going through Niall McManus who played in a holding midfield role. But the Fish kept their shape well and began to come into the game as the young Lions started to show some frustration and gave the ball away.
The highlight of the first half for Fisher fans was seeing striker Steve O’Donnell make it through the half unscathed. O’Donnell, who suffered a bad ankle fracture and ligament damage early last season, took the field for the first time in eleven months and worked hard up-front as he led the line. Chances for both sides were hard to come by, but Danny Firkins pulled off a flying save just before the half-hour mark followed by a point-blank stop from a header.
After the break both teams started to make changes, and Fisher went behind as Tobi Alabi got the better of Billy Walton in the penalty area and slotted home. Walton felt he was fouled as Alabi harried him from behind but the referee saw nothing wrong and gave the goal. Fisher responded well, and deserved the equaliser that came seven minutes later. Millwall keeper Luke Bartlett parried an Adam Wadmore free kick but could not stop Greg Wickenden from pouncing on the rebound and slotting home.
Further changes followed for both teams and Millwall took advantage to score a late winner, but Fisher can be pleased with their display against a technically gifted young side and can feel somewhat unlucky to have lost 2-1. Greg Wickenden impressed at left-back, and the lively Damien Ramsamy caused problems with his trickery and movement.
