Fisher bowed out of the Macron SCEFL Cup on Tuesday, losing 3-0 on the night (and 6-4 on aggregate) against Beckenham Town.
Fisher started the game well, producing a couple of decent chances early on, the first saw Junior James fire wide and the second resulted in a wasted cross after Beckenham’s goalkeeper fumbled a save on the edge of the box. Although Beckenham pushed forward early on, Fisher kept their defensive play simple and managed to survive the numerous spells of pressure.
Fisher won a corner in the 21st minute, and a well-planned short pass caused confusion for the Becks defence, before the ball was knocked behind for another Fish corner. This time Danny Maguire aimed for the penalty spot but no Fisher players were able to create a chance and Beckenham got the ball away. Moments later, Jay Garrick broke forward, but his powerful effort, taken from outside the box, hit the side netting.
Beckenham continued to press, still looking to level the tie, but they couldn’t beat McNamara in the Fisher goal (and when they did, the shots were off target).
Fisher had more chances to take the lead, but Becks keeper Anibaba collected a cross from jay Garrick, and then Danny Maguire fired a free kick well over the bar from threatening position. Moments later Tom Carr hit an ambitious volley but totally wasted the chance.
Fisher were made to pay for their wasteful attacking in the 42nd minute when Jake Britnell (who scored in the first leg) put Beckenham 1-0 up (levelling the aggregate score). At half time, the maths was simple; Fisher had to score (and couldn’t afford to concede) to prevent extra time.
Beckenham started the second half well, creating chance after chance as Fisher struggled to retain possession and found it even harder to get the ball forward. The second half was a physical battle between the teams, with both sides conceding free kicks for fouls across the park.
Fisher started to come to life around the hour mark, and Kieron Campbell started to cause problems for Beckenham, although they proved they were more than up to the challenge and managed to reduce Fisher to just a couple of decent chances, each of which Anibaba was ready for.
Makeshift right back Mike Damarola did well to recover possession after being left behind in a superb Beckenham attack in the 70th minute as Fisher fought away to try to stay in the tie.
Things got worse for Fisher in the 75th when Alfie Nunn headed home from a corner (which put Beckenham 5-4 up on aggregate). With Fisher now needing a goal to force extra time and two in order to progress, Beckenham sensed a victory and went all out to finish the tie.
The hosts wrapped things up in the 89th minute when Jamie Humphries tucked away Becks third goal after McNamara made a decent initial save.
So, with the cup dream over for another year, the ever vocal Fisher support found positives to take from the situation, and let’s remember, there’s always next year!
