Fisher continued their goal scoring spree and consolidated their position in second place in the SCEFL Premier Division table with a convincing 4-1 win over Kennington lit up by the Spring sunshine at St Paul’s. There was a place in the starting eleven for Sha’mar Lawson after a two match absence, with Rafael Garcia dropping to the bench, which also featured the returning Jake Lovell complimenting an already strong looking squad.
Fisher have struggled with Kennington in recent seasons with games often being tight low scoring draws but from the outset Fisher’s expansive play indicated this may well not be the case in this game. It took just six minutes for Fisher to open the scoring, as a surging run forward from Jack Gibbons seemed to be opening up for him to shoot but being unable to get the ball onto his favoured right foot he instead slipped it out wide to Festos Kamara who in turn fed Alex Kozak on the left wing. His deep teasing cross saw Armani Jordan Martin steal in at the back post to plant his header into the roof of the net.
Fisher set about looking for a second with Martin a constant threat with his neat footwork and eye for through balls combining well with Tom Jones. Jones forced keeper Joe Mant into a good save to tip an effort away and Gibbons sent over a couple of threatening crosses that had the Kennington defence scrambling to clear. Adejola Lahan then saw a powerful header tipped onto the bar and away after a well flighted Jones corner found him peeling off the defensive line. A smart turn on the edge of the box then almost set up Lawson, but having evaded three defenders to create the chance the former Millwall man couldn’t quite get enough accuracy on the shot to trouble Mant. Kennington’s main threat came from dead ball situations and they troubled Fisher with a series of corners delivered well into the danger area but the commanding back four with Conor Darwish again superb stood strong. Fisher should have gone into the break with a two goal cushion as in first half stoppage time a quick counter attack sent Festos Kamara racing clear but opting to take his shot early he saw Mant dive well low to his right to save.
Fisher started the second spell slowly and allowed the early pressure to come from Kennington and paid a heavy price as an overhit cross from the left was recycled out wide on the right and when sent back across found the aptly named Tom Fisher in too much space in the middle of the penalty area to nod home from eight yards out and level the game. The goal reawakened Fisher though and within two minutes they were back ahead due to a fine individual goal from Tom Jones. Picking the ball up wide on the right he cut inside two players before clipping a dipping curling left footed effort over the grasp of Mant and into the far corner.
Having conceded the lead once, Fisher were in no mood to do so again and continued on the front foot pressing and harrying to stop Kennington getting any sort of platform. Rafael Garcia came on for Lawson and his pace and trickery caused the visitors further problems out wide on the right. With fifteen minutes to go, Kozak and Lorenzo Duncan combined well down the left and jinking into the box along the byline Duncan was tripped allowing Tom Jones to step up and convert from the spot for his second and Fisher’s third. A few minutes later it was four as Kozak attacked the box at pace and whilst he was tackled the ball was picked up by Lorenzo Duncan and he scampered into the box, skipping through several tackles before opening out and converting into the far corner for another wonderful goal from the marauding left back – his twenty first of the season. `Fisher could have had what would have been a deserved fifth when Garcia was felled when skipping into the box, but substitMute Chibueze Echem saw his attempt from the penalty spot well saved by Mant diving to his right having read the kick well. It was not to matter as Fisher eased through injury time and added another three points to the tally as they look to secure a promotion play off spot.
