Fisher’s early season goal glut continued under the lights at St Pauls, with a comprehensive 6-3 win over Petts Wood & Holmesdale to take them four points clear at the top of the SCEFL Premier Division. Despite Conor Darwish and Tyron Mbuenimo having to sit out with knocks picked up during Saturday’s win at Erith & Belvedere, Fisher were still able to name a strong side with Aaron Archibald and Rob White taking their places. Euan Mutale also started with Rafael Garcia switching to the bench as manager Ajay Ashanike rotated his abundance of attacking firepower.
From the start Fisher looked rampant going forward as an indirect free kick inside the area for, the keeper picking up a back pass, saw Tyrese Briscoe slam the ball past the wall to draw a good save. Minutes later Temi Alka was sent clear by Kaylam Burgess’s neat through ball and dancing past the keeper was unfortunate to his clip for goal cleared off the line by a retreating defender.
The opening goal game on thirteen minutes. Jack Gibbons picked the ball up just in the inside the visitors’ half and sent over a deep cross that was not dealt with, and a defender’s boot pushed it into the path of Euan Mutale to acrobatically hook home his seventh goal in seven games. Fisher could have doubled the lead two minutes later as James Bessey-Saldanha, slammed a rasping drive against the crossbar with the keeper just managing to block Alaka’s follow up header. The second goal did follow soon after as some slick one-touch passing involving James Bessey-Saldanha and Jack Gibbons released Alaka down the right and Festos Kamara nipped in to slip home the resulting low cross from six yards out. Three minutes later Fisher were on cruise control, as a quickly taken corner on the left fed Temi Alaka and he cut into the box, moving the ball onto his right foot, before drilling a thunderous strike that flew in off the underside of the crossbar at the near post.
Holmesdale looked shell shocked but finally managed to get into the final third with Zacharias Akinde making a magnificent triple save in the Fisher goal, diving both right and left to deny what looked a certain goal for Charlie Clover. However, Fisher swept up field and almost grabbed a fourth as Alaka drew a good save from Hobbs on the counter. Three minutes from the break though Fisher made it four. Aaron Archibald played in Festos Kanara down the left channel and out pacing his marker he burst into the box and using his left foot angled a powerful shot low into the far corner, leaving the 238 attendees in the crowd heading for their half time refreshments agog at the irresistible first half display of attacking football.
The second half started in similar fashion as inside five minutes Fisher had a fifth as a quick short throw found the impressive James Bessey-Saldanha, who turned and shot in one movement to send the ball rifling into the far corner. However, despite being five down Holmesdale showed some determination to make the score respectable and a quick move down the right saw a low cross turned into his own net by Don Macaulay trying to cut the ball out at the near post. Charlie Clover then pulled a second back with a simple finish after finding space to get onto a neat through ball from Sabier as the game become a little bit basketball like sweeping from end to end with the visitors hitting the bar and post in quick succession.
Any hope of an improbable comeback disappeared with ten minutes to go as Festos Kamara was felled in the box as he was set to shoot and he stepped up to slam home the penalty to complete his hat trick. Holmesdale then went back up the other end for good measure and made it 6-3 when Fyn Rutherford profited from Fisher being slow to close a short corner and swept a shot over Akinde into the far corner to complete the scoring. The points were safely in Fisher’s pocket by then though as they continue their impressive start to the season.
