Fisher rubber stamped their play off spot with a point after a high scoring draw with Hollands and Blair, to round off their SCEFL Premier Division season. Baring a very heavy defat and a comprehensive win for nearest rivals Rusthall, Fisher went into the game almost assured of the coveted play off place and as result rested some players in preparation for Tuesday’s semi-final. Halim Bakre and Jacob Katonia started on the wings and Ed Sata returned from injury to slot in at left back. Sam Amedu also came in for his first game since the season opener, in goal.
Fisher started the game well and took just four minutes to carve out the first chance of the game as Bakre and Jack Gibbons combined on the right and fed Kesna Clarke and his shot on the turn passed just wide of the near post. Four minutes leader Fisher did take the lead after Bakre had been felled as he looked to burst through the Blair defensive line and from the resulting free kick Armani-Jordan Martin’s twenty five yard effort bounced awkwardly at the keeper’s near post and over his dive into the net.
Fisher looked to have the game under control this point, but a crazy twenty minute spell saw them concede three times as the game turned on its head. The equaliser came as Blair switched the ball well over to their left and Drew Briffitt beat Gibbons to the ball to then carry it into the area, where he smashed it past Amedu giving the keeper no chance. Jack Gibbons then saw a deflected shot well saved as Fisher looked to respond immediately, but they could not profit from the resulting corner and five minutes after the equaliser Briffitt repeated his scoring trick, this time getting on the end of Devonte West’s pass and confidently converting amidst confusion in the Fisher back line, who had stopped on seeing the assistants flag temporarily raised and then lowered as the referee seemed to overrule the call. On the half hour the game had been well and truly turned around as Blair added a third, with West rifling in an effort from out on the left with a wonderous strike.
Nervous glances at phones were now in order to check Rusthall weren’t racking up the goals in their game, with Fisher needing to steady the ship. Conor Darwish was introduced for Michael Sarpong to bolster the midfield and give Fisher a platform to get back into the game and news filtered through that Rusthall were still being held in their game making a dramatic goal difference turnaround unlikely.  Shortly before the break Fisher gave themselves hope, by pulling goal back, thanks to sixteen goal striker, Kesna Clarke. His smart run down the channel of the left hand side of the area was timed perfectly to get on the end of Salim Nassor’s neat low through ball and he tucked the ball under the advancing Dan Ellis, whose touch whilst slowing the balls progress could not stop it rolling into the far corner.
The second half saw Fisher immediately level the game up. Having worked their way down the right Jack Gibbons fed the ball into Kesna Clarke and turning inside his marker with a deft touch he shot powerfully with his left foot across Ellis to double his tally and make it eighteen for the season. Having levelled the game, with the point all that was needed to secure fourth spot, Fisher were happy to rest some legs and bring on substitutes, which affected the flow of the game and Blair couldn’t find the space they had in the first half, meaning the game meandered a little. Amedu came a caught several good balls into the Fisher box and substitute Dan Flemming failed to unduly trouble Ellis in goal when shooting after a good through ball had sent him clear, as neither side looked particularly likely to grab a winner. A late foul on Flemming earned Blair’s centre back his second booking of the game, but his team saw out the added time with ten men with little alarm.
Fisher will now trave down to Whitstable Town on Tuesday night for their semi-final tie, with the winners either away to VCD Athletic or at home to Punjab United in the final on Bank Holiday Monday.
