Fisher eased to a comfortable win to advance the second round of the Challenge Cup after beating First Division side Bridon Ropes under the lights at St Pauls, by four goals to nil. Fisher made several changes to Saturday’s lineup but were still able to put out a very strong side with Peter Ojemen coming in for a one off game, to replace Conor Darwish, Stephan Richard Kingson replacing Ange Djadja and starts for Kelvin Bakare, Tyron Mbuenimo and Lorenzo Duncan in midfield.
Fisher were quickly into their stride and a good run by Jake Lovell down the right wing saw his low cross deflected into the path of Tyron Mbuenimo whose powerful shot was blocked by a defender when he looked to have fired it home. The home supporters didn’t have to wait long for the first goal though as on nine minutes Fisher took the lead. Following a spell of pressure a loose clearance was picked up by Jack Gibbons just inside the Bridon Ropes half and he strode forward, cutting inside one defender and dropping a shoulder past another before from fully 25 yards rifling the ball into the far top corner with the keeper a mere spectator.
Bridon Ropes did have a fine chance to equalise, when a ball deflected back to keeper Tommy Taylor was adjudged to have been a control back pass with Taylor penalised for picking it up. However, with the entire Fisher team lining up on the goal line to defend the indirect free kick on the edge of the six yard box, the powerfully struck shot was deflected over the crossbar.
Fisher were being afforded far too much space across the pitch they were able to move the ball about at will, with plenty of good interchange passing taking place through the midfield and both wingers seeing good service. It was no surprise therefore, that on 22 minutes they doubled their advantage when having forced a corner on the left a fine in swinging delivery was met by Festos Kamara with a powerful header which went in off the inside of the post. Fisher pretty much wrapped game up seven minutes later when Lorenzo Duncan added a third with a sublime individual effort having shuffled the ball past two defenders, he then curled a majestic effort around the keeper into the net. With the game pretty much in the bag, Fisher dropped the intensity slightly despite having long spells of possession, moving the ball across the pitch and keeping Bridon Ropes very much penned into their own half, but the half time whistle came with no further addition to the score.
Fisher were again quickly out the blocks in the second half and inside three minutes had added a fourth goal when Jake Lovell sped past the Bridon Ropes left back and his low cross was teed up for Tyron Mbuenimo to smash the ball home low through a number of defenders on the line for his first goal of the season. It was to be Lovell’s last involvement in the game as he was replaced by 16 year old debutant Harvey Clark who then put in an impressive performance for someone so young on the right wing. Fellow debutante Blake Loysa also came on off the bench replacing Festos Kamara and showed he will give Fisher a different option with some old fashioned centre forward play, with the former Redhill man unlucky not to get on the score sheet with two excellent headers from crosses late on in the game.
With Nas Crespo, Billy Brown and Omari Williams also coming off the bench, the game broke up a little during the second spell, but it was still a one way traffic and in the last ten minutes Fisher sent in a number of shots that flew wide or into the keeper’s hands as Fisher continued to push for fifth. It wasn’t to come however, so the game ended with a four nil scoreline with Fisher comfortably into the second round where they will face another First Division side, Welling Town at home on a yet to be decided date.
