Pre-season friendly

Having moved the game back twenty four hours to avoid the worst of the heatwave, Fisher travelled to Woodford Town for a competitive friendly played out on a far cooler evening albeit on a rock hard and ‘glassy’ pitch at Ashton Fields.

Fisher started well and Manny Shoderu regularly found space down the right but couldn’t pick out the trialist centre forward with several crosses. Having weathered Fisher’s early pressure Woodford took a hold of the midfield and almost opened the scoring midway through the half when a speculative cross deceived the trialist keeper and bounced back of the inside of the post. Both sides exchanged some long-range shots which largely flew high and wide as the game became a hard-working tussle between the two midfields.

The second spell saw the hosts  make a range of substitutions and a kit change and the changes were to good affect as they took the game to Fisher. However defensively Fisher looked strong and the game seemed to be moving towards a stalemate. Fisher got into some promising positions out side but couldn’t find a telling ball into the area whereas Woodford stayed mainly central in attack with short passing and midfielders running in behind. Ten game was settled, as is often the case on a mistake, after a fairly harmless through ball was not dealt with positively enough and a forward nipped into to pounce on the loose ball and switch inside to convert. A good save form a second trialist keeper at his near post stopped Woodford adding a second as Fisher committed players forward looking for an equaliser with Shoderu’s free kick only just wide of the upright with the keeper beaten.

A good workout on a difficult surface – something Fisher need to learn to play on, ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat but will have given players more miles in legs and allowed manager Ajay Ashanike a chance to make some decisions over the remaining trialists.
