Fisher FC 4 – 0 Farnborough Old Boys Guild
Troy Abbey ’36, Alfie Roche ’37, Rob Curtis ’79, Harry Budgen ’86
Fisher celebrated their return to Rotherhithe after a 12 year exodus with a convincing 4-0 win against a well prepared Farnborough OBG side. Playing their first game at the new St Paul’s Stadium across the road from the former home of Fisher Athletic, the Fish continued their preparations for the SCEFL Premier League kick off, giving a lively crowd a show in the process.
Following a surprisingly tempestuous opening 20 minutes the home side found a way through the Farnborough backline, with Troy Abbey writing himself into the history books with the first goal at the new stadium, a perfectly weighted chip from some 25 yards out. Only 80 seconds later Alfie Roche doubled the lead, finishing cooly from the left after a lay-off from Abbey, putting Fisher firmly in control at the break.
Interim Manager Rob Curtis gave himself a run out for the second 45 minutes, a wise decision as he rose higher than anyone else to head home from a corner to make it three. The Fisher fans found their voice more in the second half, obviously starting to feel very much at home – enjoying both the display on the pitch and the view out across Canary Wharf which is surely the best from any terrace in London.
Though not overly tested over the 90 minutes, keeper Ricky Wadman showed great alertness when needed, including a great take in a crowded 6 yard box following a cross from the left. With the Farnborough defence stretched left back Harry Budgen unexpectedly popped up in the box to calmly slot home the fourth.
Club Officials would like to thank all supporters for their understanding and assistance as we work out how everything works at St. Paul’s. In particular, thank you to everyone who signed up as Members and bought Season Tickets – your support is vital in helping the club achieve our ambitious goals both on and off the pitch.
