Fisher bowed out of the FA Vase with defeat away at SCEFL 1 leaders Kennington.
The hosts were ahead inside the opening 5 minutes after Calvin Sedenu recycled the ball at a set piece situation and found Gary Lockyer. He nodded down for Callum Peck to lash home from the edge of the area.

Fisher could have been level quickly, Jamie Yilla won a corner on the left hand side with some tricky footwork & his ball was knocked down to Christian Udo – whose goalbound effort was blocked by Luke Hughes on the line.

Udo went close again soon after when Thomas centre found Yilla who headed to Udo, he swivelled and a deflection took the ball away for a corner which didn’t come to anything.

The visitors in truth were the better side for long periods in the first half and Owen, Philpott & Sedenu all had chances to extend the lead but a combination of good defending, good goalkeeping & the crossbar kept them at bay and the score at 1-0.

HT 1-0

Kennington again began strongly with Ryan Philpott’s volley needing Sam Fitzgerald’s intervention to prevent a goal in the early stages of the half.

Fisher won a penalty on 54 minutes, Roddy Lemba’s knockdown finding Jamie Yilla who knocked the ball past Joe Mant in goal, he bought him down and referee Dan Blades (In a rare show of correct decision making) pointed to the spot. Rob Brown stepped up and placed a poor penalty to Mant’s right hand side. An easy save for the keeper as it was at a good height for him.

Gary Lockyer again went close for the hosts but was denied by a smart goal line clearance.
As the game entered the last 20 minutes you sensed it might need something special to beat Mant & level the tie.

Fisher found that via substitute Avelin Cedric (Nganga?) with 72 minutes played. His curling effort from the edge of the area finding the bottom right hand corner of the Ton net. Game on could either side find a winner?

The goal seemed to reverse the flow of the game and Fisher now had a spring in their step with Jack Gibbons pace being a great outlet on the right hand side. He had the best opportunity of the last few minutes and fired well over when he time and space to play with after a superb cross field ball from Roddy Lemba. He did go close again when Yilla’s cross found him at the back post but his header found the side netting.

For all the effort The Fish just couldn’t find the winner and it was penalties as the game finished 1-1.

FT 1-1

Penalties:
Kennington: ❌✅✅✅✅✅
Fisher: ✅❌✅✅✅❌

Although, Carpanini made a fantastic save for the first, it wasn’t to be and in the end Peter Ojemen was the unlucky man to miss the decisive penalty. Penalties are always a lottery and it takes bottle to take one.

There were also some unsavoury scenes after the whistle with fans of both sides not exactly covering themselves in glory. Several Kennington supporters were taken from the bar and marched out of the ground by security guards.

There was also a confrontation between Fish manager AJ Ashanike & at least 1 Kennington fan with regards to comments made to The Fish bench. Managers should not have to face abuse from so called fans and it’s since come to light that it isn’t the first time that opposition bosses have faced this sort of treatment down there. Food for thought for the victorious hosts.
