Fisher eased though the second qualifying round of the FA Vase with a dominant 4-0 win over Southern Combination League side Bexhill United at St Paul’s.
Tyron Mbuenimo returned for the Fish after missing last week’s game with illness and there were starts for Inesh Sumithran and Thomas Ngegba, swapping places with Luke Thomas and Eniye Amgbaduba on the bench. Sam Amedu returned in goal for his first game after being injured in the FA Cup in early August and with Andres Tobon and Fred Obasa also drafted in, it was a much changed starting eleven.
The changes certainly paid off, as from the start Fisher were bright and enterprising on the ball, with Charles Yiadom-Konadu at the heart of everything, beating players with ease in a masterly midfield performance. Bexhill had a prolific pair of strikers up front, who had contributed to eighteen of the nineteen goal so far this season, but Mark Chidi and Joseph Adewunmi were dominant at the back with Tyron Mbuenimo playing just in front of the two centre backs, ensuring there was little supply to the visitors’ front men.
Fisher’s first clear sight on goal saw Yiadom-Konadu make space outside the edge of the area to fire a low shot that the Bexhill keeper beat away at his near post, quickly followed by Andres Tobon putting a back post header into the side netting from the resulting corner.
With Fisher very much on the front foot the opening goal finally arrived on sixteen minutes, when Yiadom-Konadu picked the ball up just outside the penalty area and danced past the left back with some mesmerising footwork before slipping the ball back to Thomas Ngegba who swept the ball home from ten yards out.
Having been provider for the first goal, Yiadom-Konadu then got his own name on the scoresheet ten minutes later. Having stated the move by driving through the midfield, he slipped the ball to Fred Obasa in the right channel and his low cross to Ngegba was nudged back into the path of Yiadom-Konadu arriving late in the box, to flick the ball past the keeper.
Four minutes later Fisher had total control of the game with a third goal. Joseph Adewunmi stepped out of the back line, carrying the ball into the Bexhill half before slipping a well-paced pass through for Fred Obasa to nip onto, just before the advancing keeper, and after skipping his challenge rolled the ball into the empty net.
The second half saw Fisher carry on where they left off and six minutes after the break they added a fourth. Obasa recycled a deep cross well and chipped a pinpoint cross into the box where Thomas Ngegba powerfully headed the ball out of the reach of the Bexhill keeper.
The fourth goal allowed Fisher to use their bench to rest legs for Tuesday’s league game with Erith Town and Teddy Jones came on Tobon for an excellent cameo, going close to rounding off a couple of great moves down the left with a goal after linking up well with Conor Darwish and Yiadom-Konadu as Fisher dazzled with some sublime one touch football.
Yiadom-Konadu almost added a wonderous fifth goal dancing through several tackles as he cut into the penalty area form wide on the right, before seeing his shot well saved at the near post. In the words of one visiting defender about the midfield maestro after the game, “I knew what he was going to do, but I just couldn’t stop him doing it!” Mbuenimo also saw a shot from outside the edge of the box well saved as Fisher continued to press for further goals.
Luke Thomas and Brandy Makuendi came on for Ezekiel Miller and Inesh Sumithran, with Makuendi seeing his long range effort tipped over the bar in the dying moments of the game. Fisher saw the added time out with ease to put themselves into the hat for Monday’s first round draw on the back of a comprehensive victory.
