Cheshunt the birth place of page three stunner Linda Lusardi. Or just a David Beckham free kick away Victoria Beckham grew up in Goffs oak. But for me the most famous person to reside in this area was Richard Cromwell who died in Cheshunt but not before famously taking apart the old palace house to pay his soldiers and staff. Which is situated in Cedars park across the road from Cheshunts ground the aptly titled Cheshunt Stadium.

Seeing as it was a toss up between driving all the way home and battling my way back round the M25 through rush hour traffic. I opted to go to Cheshunt straight from work. A 45 minute drive up the A1, spin on the M25 and into the glorious Cedar park English heritage site. All this groundhopping unearths gems like this for me.

A cheeseburger & chips in the cafe plus Diet Coke set me back a tenner. But it was cheap as the stunning views across the park were worth every penny. The original Cheshunt former around 1880 won the Herts senior cup in 1924 and reached the semi final of the amateur FA cup in 1903/4 and 1905/6. Also members of the Athenian league after the Great War.

After finishing bottom 4 seasons in a row the club disbanded in 1931. Reforming in 1946 joining the London league. Winning the division one title in 1947/8 and again in 48/9. The 49/50 season saw the club win the premier division on the last day of the season beating Tilbury.

The club had a real tough time in the 90s but since the early 2000s Cheshunt have had stability in spades and have looked to prepare themselves for life higher up the non league pyramid. Tonight’s Game against Cheshunt is I believe the first time Fisher have played them since reforming.

The game itself was advertised as being played at the stadium. But it was actually played on the 3G next to the stadium. This had the groundhoppers reaching for the delete button on the futbology app. With both sides fielding a mixture of youngsters and trialists the game had a very good tempo to it as players looked to impress. Add to that a ref who shall we say let a lot go for both sides a tasty game ensued.

9 minutes on the clock and Dennis Asante turned on a sixpence and fired his effort into the Chesham keepers top left hand corner without him moving. 0-1

A minute later and Sam Edwards sends a 20 yard drive whistling just wide of the keepers left hand post. Fisher had started brightly and young Jack Gibbons had a lively start using the ball well and forcing the Chesham left back into a couple of last ditch tackles. It was Gibbons who produced the next chance playing a slide rule pass down the channel towards Asante but as he looked to get away the big number 5 for Chesham gets a toe in to nick the ball away.
Carpanini in the Fisher goal was tested for the first time when a stinging drive from fully 25 yards by the 4 had Carpo getting down to save to his right.

The Trialist wearing 2 for Fisher dovetailed well down the right with Gibbons after a superb diagonal ball from Foulkes. Gibbons cross was met by Asante in the six yard box but he heads wide of the target. The game ebbed and flowed as both teams played some quality football. Carpo had to be on his toes to push away a free kick from the left. The Chesham 5 fires over the half cleared ball wildly.

Just after the half hour Jack Gibbons sends a free kick into the keepers arms. Gibbons showed quick feet again to get down the right hand side once again teaming up well with the right back. Gibbons drives his cross low across goal and it just evades Asante as he looked to add his second.

Trey Small is next into action as he gets a chance coming in from the left he beat his man and as the ball sat up he slashed at it and sends the ball high wide and not particularly handsome.
Atkinson is replaced in midfield by a Trialist as he appeared to have picked up a knock.

Sarpong playing at left back showed some brilliant footwork dancing down the left touchline don’t blame it on the moonlight don’t blame it on the sunshine blame it on the boogie because Micheal Jackson himself would have been proud of those moves.
Fisher should be further in front as the half came to a close.

HT Cheshunt 0-1 Fisher

The usual raft of changes as is the norm in pre season took place and it was sub Lee Weemes who was immediately into the fray forcing the keeper into a save. The keeper turned it round the post for a corner which was wasted.

Edwards managed to get some time and space and it was his smart reverse pass to Trialist wearing 17 who looked to be away and scampering towards goal. But the lino had other ideas and waved him offside.

Cheshams left winger wearing 11 and bearing more than a canny resemblance to Mo Salah hung up a high ball to the big number 10 who really should have scored with his header.

Sam Fitzgerald’s running battle with the 10 was a particular highlight of the game. As no quarter was asked or given. Fitzgerald winning on points as the 10 moved from centre forward into midfield for the last half hour looking a beaten man. Sarpong showing great feet again rolls the ball into midfield Franco just beats the keeper to the ball. A swift turn and he fires wide.

Cheshunt then returned fire when the 8 cracks the crossbar as the ball is rolled back to him from a corner. Tommy Taylor the half time change in goal for Fisher didn’t know much about it. Weemes increased Fishers lead in the 68th minute. A pass from 17 left Weemes to show his composure in front of goal with a side footed slot from just inside the area.

Cheshunt although 0-2 down had not let there heads drop and both substitute wide men began to influence the game.

The 17 began to weave through Fisher players with ease. Cheshunts right winger wearing 15 forced Taylor to make a fine save low down after a nice dribble and shot that deserved more. Cheshunt pulled a goal back in the 87th minute when a drive from the 15 cannoned back off the post and the 9 reacted the quickest as all good centre forwards do to tap home into the empty net as Taylor lay stranded. 1-2

Cheshunts equaliser came courtesy of a howler by Tommy Taylor. As a soft looking shot went through his hands In time added on. 2-2

Taylor like everyone else will be gutted as Fisher had done more than enough against opponents two steps higher. Tommy will recover from that as Fisher have two fine keepers battling for the number 1 spot this season.

The game finishes Desmond (2-2) and the welcome and hospitality from Cheshunt was brilliant. I will be back at some stage to watch Cheshunt in the stadium.
