Fisher continued their good pre-season form with a 2-2 draw against two league higher opposition, in neighbours and former landlord’s Dulwich Hamlet, amidst the summer showers at St Paul’s.
Dulwich fielded two elevens, one in each half with their first team players spread over both, whilst Fisher opted for a stronger first half selection with a number of trialists coming on in the second half. There was a welcome return for keeper Sam Amedu between the sticks and a first appearance of the pre-season for Teddy Jones, as Fisher largely stuck with the players that shone in the 5-3 win over Sutton Common Rovers earlier in the week.
Fisher started well, moving the ball quickly and making good use of both flanks with Teddy Jones giving the Hamlet’s left back a few difficulties. Several times in the early stages he got to the byline, but the crosses just evaded the forwards in the box. The first real opportunity to the game came when Fisher won a free kick within shooting range, but the powerful effort struck the well positioned wall. Hamlet’s early danger came mainly from high balls delivered into the box, but Ange Djadja and impressive youngster Charlie Burton-Eaton looked to be forming a decent partnership in the centre of defence and won the aerial battle.
Fisher had claims for a penalty waved away midway through the half when Thomas Ngegba tumbled into the box and at the other end Amedu saved well from a low drive to turn the ball round the post for a corner. However, as half time approached the game swung Fisher’s way. Some good build up play forced a double save from the keeper from Ngegba’s effort and with the resulting corner penning Dulwich in their own half for a spell Fisher took advantage and swept into the lead as a half cleared header found Armani-Jordan Martin on the edge of the box and the midfielder struck a sweet volley that fell into the bottom corner for a well taken goal. Two minutes later Fisher doubled their advantage as Jones did well down the right and Dulwich failed to clear the danger in the box so when Diego Makesa shot was blocked it allowed Thomas Ngegba to swivel onto the loose ball and rifle home, low under the keeper.
The second half saw Dulwich come out the stronger and immediately got on the front foot, with a defender’s goal line clearance denying them an early reply after trialist keeper Enos Duah had been rounded. Fisher lacked a bit of the tempo from the first half with the ball coming slower out of the back, allowing the Dulwich midblock to take control of midfield more than in the first forty five.
Dulwich reduced the arrears on sixty one minutes as a long cross field switch of play allowed their left winger to get in behind Luke Thomas and his low cross was tucked home from close range. With Fisher struggling to get hold of the ball or find the same possession in the opposition half as they had done in the first half, an equaliser for Dulwich seemed likely and duly arrived on sixty eight minutes. A quick break down the right turned the Fisher defence around and the scampering right winger pulled the ball back well to an unmarked George Porter, who swept home from the edge of the box as Fisher struggled to get men back behind the ball.
With the game looking like it might run away from them, Fisher made a few tactical changes, bringing back on Eaton-Burton and this gave them better shape and balance. With a quarter of an hour to play they fashioned a good chance when a deep free kick found Melvin Adesida free at the back post, but his header was gathered by Dillon Barnes in the Hamlet’s goal.
Both sides pressed for winner with Hamlets always looking slightly the more likely, but bar a Dulwich free kick that sailed into the trees into the Pond End neither side created anything clear cut and the spoils and local bragging rights were shared after a good workout for both sides.
