Pre Season Friendly

Fisher had a useful workout in their final home pre-season friendly, working hard to overcome a resilient Wembley side by two goals at St Pauls. With the number of squad players still on holiday. Fisher brought in several trialists into their line-up and included Michael Sarpong back guesting with the club in an unfamiliar centre back role.
Whilst much of the early play saw Fisher in control of the match, with the lion share of possession it was Wembley who had the first real chance on goal what a header from a deep cross was directed back across the goal and just went over the crossbar. At the other end Kesna Clarke, playing alongside a trialist striker volleyed narrowly wide after losing his marker and midfield dynamo Tom Jones cut inside a defender to force a smart save from the keeper – who had in fact appeared for Fisher as a trialist earlier in pre-season.
Fisher deservedly took the lead on the quarter of an hour mark when a chipped through ball allowed Clarke’s trialist strike partner to run through and neatly lob the advancing keeper, with the ball just dropping in time to squeeze in under the bar. Minutes later Fisher almost doubled the lead when some excellent approach play released Alfawaz Dada on the right and his deep cross was met by Kesna Clarke peeling off his marker, but the header flashed just wide of the upright, denying what would have been very well worked goal.
Wembley continued to prove a tough side to open up and big physical presence up front with eager running of the channels, gave them a good outlet when clearing. Sam Amedu smothered a dangerous low cross and punched away several high balls into the box, though Wembley struggled for a clear sight of goal, with their best effort drilled wide of the post.
Other than a swap of keepers, Fisher resisted any wholesale changes at half time and were able to keep their fluency as result and five minutes after the break doubled their lead when attempted clearance from a Wembley defender was charged down by the Fisher midfield. The rebound allowed Kesna Clarke to burst through, outpace the last defender and confidently slot the ball low past the advancing keeper.
The goal then signalled some changes for Fisher, which whilst not affecting their control of the game, did slightly slowup the attacking intent. A claim for a penalty was waved away with the trialist involved cautioned for looking to initiate the contact as Wembley continued to doggedly defend their box. A further trialist was fortunate to not face more severe sanction after a rash tackle on halfway, which in a league fixture may have seen a card of either colour.
Fifteen minutes from the end Fisher almost added a third when good pressing of the keeper whi had left his area towards the touchline saw an outrageous dipping volley from Tom Jones from fully twenty five yards out that was beaten away high to his right by the desperately retreating keeper. A late cameo from fans favourite Billy Brown, making his first appearance of the preseason campaign was a final delight for the 112 present in the crowd, as the game came to a close amidst a heavy summer downpour.
Fisher now move on to their final pre-season game, at Heybridge Swifts on Saturday, before the season starts in earnest with the opening league fixture at Tunbridge Wells the week after and then the FA Cup game with Camberely Town back at St Pauls. Manager Ajay Ashanike will no doubt be pleased with the shape and progress he has seen in the squad in preparation so far.
