Fisher started their SCEFL Premier Division campaign at St Paul’s with a well deserved 3-1 win against one of the title favourites, Deal Town.
With manager Ajay Ashanike on a well deserved family holiday, Luke With took over the hot seat and will be pleased with a high energy yet composed performance from the new look side. There was a debut in the midfield for Ezekiel Miller and off the bench for JoJo Kinzonzi and Joseph Koroma, as well as a return for Tobi Irefin, who featured briefly early last season.
Fisher started the game well and Billy Brown made early inroads down the right flank, getting past his marker and sending over serval dangerous balls. Another good bit of play down the right, this time involving Tyron Mbuenimo, saw his drag back narrowly fired over by Irefin, after the youngster found space in the box.
Fisher were not to wait long for a goal after that near miss though, as on 16 minutes Eniye Amgbaduba powered through several tackles after linking up with Manny Shoderu and with a little fortune on the bounce managed to get the ball out of his feet and drove in low into the near corner of the net to give Fisher the lead.
It was a lead that would be doubled just three minutes later, as the powerful Amgbaduba bustled in from the right wing and teed up Manny Shoderu to fire home from close range, giving Fisher the perfect start to both the game and the season.
Not unexpectedly, as a side that have not lost a competitive game since early January, Deal battled back well and put the Fisher goal under severe pressure, with a series of corners and long throws. Sam Amedu in the Fisher goal pulled two incredible saves in as many minutes; the second one seeing him somehow claw a goal bound effort away via the bar.
At the other end, Inesh Sumithran overlapped well from full back and fizzed in an excellent low cross that just evaded Shoderu as it flew across the face of the goal and Luke Thomas just failed to pick out Amgbaduba or Irefin when he burst down the right.
As Fisher looked to go into the break two up, Deal seized on an opportunity from a softly conceded corner and a deep delivery lured Sam Amedu outside his back post, before being headed back in where two attempts on goal were both blocked by Fisher players, however they were clearly behind the goal line and the assistant correctly signalled a goal to halve Fisher’s advantage at the break.
The second spell saw Fisher tire on what was an unexpectedly hot afternoon. Sumithran had to be withdrawn just before the hour mark, seeing Manny Brown come in in midfield and Mbuenimo drop into the right back berth. After having an effort well saved Amgbaduba then gave way for Kyron Cooper with the big man earning a tremendous round of applause for a very impressive performance up top.     Deal were unable to force the same sort of threat on the Fisher goal has they had in the latter stages of the first half and Ezekiel Miller mopping up in front of Thomas and Imoru gave the Fish a very solid impenetrable base.
With Billy Brown and Manny Shoderu also running themselves to standstill, the fresh young legs of Joseph Koroma and Jojo Kinzonzi entered the fray and their energy helped Fisher to  play some good counter attacking football.
From a spell of Deal pressure Fisher managed to clear their lines and found Koroma with a lot of space in front of him –  the winger burst to halfway before stroking a delightful through ball for Kyron Cooper to run onto with blistering speed and despite having seemed to have taken the ball a touch wide, he slotted home with style into the far corner to carry over his fine goalscoring form from pre season and restore Fisher’s two goal advantage with ten minutes to play.
Deal pressured well to find a way back into the game and were buoyed by nine minutes of added time, however found a resolute Fisher defence who restricted the visitors to just one clear cut chance, which was fired over when a good sight of goal was available to the forward.
The final whistle came with little concern for Fisher’s lead and was greeted by huge cheers from the home fans that may well have been heard by boss Ashanike by the pool!
