Fisher suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of high-flying Greenwich Borough as Michael Power’s hat trick proved the difference between the two sides at Champion Hill.
The hosts began the game on the front foot and took a deserved lead after just five minutes when Travis Gregory raced down the right by-line and cut the ball back for Emiliano Hysi to despatch a cool side-footed finish into the bottom corner.
Fisher were buoyed by their early opener, with Gregory and Tyrell Mcleod-Bentley’s pace unsettling Boro’s defence and the former came close to sliding the latter though on goal on the ten-minute mark.
The away side claimed an equalizer mid-way through the first half as Boro striker Power profited from slack marking to crack home a volley at the far post following a corner.
Debutant Daniel Flemming almost edged the Fish back in front just three minutes later after another lung-busting run from Gregory had caused confusion in the visitors’ penalty area.
But it was Ian Jenkins’ men who would grab the next goal in the 36th minute as they were awarded a penalty when Gassimu Jalloh felled visiting midfielder Danny Phillips in the Fisher box. Ex-Millwall ace Gary Alexander stepped up to blast the spot-kick beyond the reach of Denzel Kobia and into the top corner. If Kobia felt aggrieved to have conceded twice in quick succession, then there was little he could do but doff his proverbial hat at Boro’s third goal, which arrived just before the interval.
The sumptuous strike came from the right boot of Power, who spotted Kobia stray slightly off his line before producing an immaculate lob from just behind the halfway line. It was a thing of beauty and brilliance.
Kobia made way for Ade Adeneyi at half-time, and the newly-introduced stopper had no chance of preventing Power from completing his treble on 58 minutes, as the burly forward crashed in a close-range fourth after good work from Mo Eisa. Boro were starting to look more and more confident in their attacking ability and Jake Brittnell saw his searing drive come back off the junction of post and crossbar in the 60th minute.
The Fish still harboured hopes of a comeback, yet it felt as though this would not be their day when Gregory’s snap-shot flashed inches wide of Craig Holloway’s goal after a neat move down the left-hand side. But perhaps you’re asking Lady Luck for one too many favours if you can’t get the basics right. As for all of Fisher’s positive play going forward, another defensive lapse sealed the win for Boro, with Billy Bennett bundling home a corner all too easily.
There was another moment of genius for the crowd to savour though, as Fish substitute Benga Ogunseye scored the game’s seventh and final goal courtesy of a virtuoso solo effort. The winger produced some mesmerising footwork to bamboozle his marker in the penalty area before spanking the ball inside Holloway’s near post from the tightest of angles.
It was ultimately a case of too little too late for Dean Harrison’s men, whose Halloween nightmares will have consisted of set-piece routines and long-range stunners rather than vampires and werewolves.
Despite this loss leaving Fisher sitting in 15th place in the SCEFL standings, the Bermondsey side will take heart from the fact that they were in a much more precarious position at this point last season. There is more than enough firepower in the squad to propel the Fish up the table. After all, it’s not every week you come up against strikers capable of scoring from the halfway line like it’s nothing.
