Fisher went into this Bank Holiday Monday game looking to pick up some league points after a three match interlude in the league programme for cup games.
Having played on Saturday some changes were made with Michael Sarpong returning for the injured Osemen Usifoh and Nader Zeddini coming in for Darnel Bromfield. The changes proved successful as Zeddini’s tidy mopping up in midfield and Sarpong’s more expansive style saw Fisher sweep forward in a series of attacks that gave good chances to both Isaac Thompson and Many Shoderu. At the other end Lee Friend managed to skip clear onto a high through ball and his clever lob was only just over the bar.
Thompson then found himself with a good chance having latched onto a through ball from Sarpong but the Holmesdale keeper was quickly out to blunt the danger. Minutes later though the same combination of Sarpong and Thompson saw the Fisher frontman beat the keeper ot the ball before being bundled over giving a fairly straight forward decision for the referee to point to the spot. Manny Shoderu stepped up and slammed the ball home to give Fisher a 25th minute lead.
The goal spurred Fisher on and some impressive approach play saw a series of chances. Coker got away on the right and his fierce cross shot was blocked by the keeper but Shoderu could not quite steer the pinball rebound home from close range. Further good work down the right saw Luke Thomas clip over a deep cross that Shoderu headed goalward only to be thwarted by a good block from the keeper.
Fisher went into the break a goal to the good and playing with some swagger but the game was to quickly change as just three minutes into the second half a disastrous error at the back allowed Ali-Osman to nick the ball off Sam Amedu and stab the ball home for an equaliser. The setback took the stuffing out of Fisher and the quick fluent passing that saw them on the attach in the first half disappeared during a scrappy twenty-minute period. This was not helped by a number of stoppages with a clash of heads seeing Malaki Coker leave the field replaced by Pat Hoy.
Despite less fluency Fisher still pressed and Thompson again worked Boughtflower in the Daler’s goal with a low shot having cut in form the right and was thwarted again by the keeper’s legs when rifling in a shot from Adewunmi’s lofted through ball.
Dennis Asante came on for Shoderu as Fisher looked for a way to unlock a resolute defence. A late corner almost gave Fisher the goal they craved – Thompson’s delivery was blocked but with his second attempt he found Sarpong at the back post but his goal bond header struck his own player and dribbled out for a goal kick.
A point from a well fought game was not enough to stop Fisher slipping to the base of the embryonic league table, although the performances with two narrow one nil defeats and two draws coupled with being unbeaten in five cup games suggest it will not be long before they start to climb the table. However, with further cup action next week their rivals will have played a game or two more before Fisher next get a run of league games.
