Whyteleafe rounded off a month to forget for Fisher when they visited Champion Hill on Monday.
After losing against Ashford United on Saturday by 4 goals to 1, Fisher were hoping for a better start to the bank holiday derby game than they actually managed. The first five minutes went relatively well (compared to previous games) with the Fish putting together a string of good passes. Whyteleafe broke forward in the seventh minute and Jason Thompson put the visitors ahead with their first effort on target.
Just minutes later, Whyteleafe got forward again, this time Charlie Hyam was able to make an easy save from close range.
Fisher then showed signs of progress, holding possession well with some fantastic passing through the midfield. As has been the case in the first month of the football season, all the passing and good movement created nothing other than a decent effort which failed to worry the Leafe goalkeeper. Fisher then won a free kick, which was taken indirectly and sailed over the heads of the awaiting attackers. The resulting goal-kick launched Whyteleafe forward with substitute Taylor Smith slamming the ball into the goal from close range for 2-0.
With Whyteleafe now in control, Fisher tried hard to get themselves back into the game but the only effort that came close to a goal was a corner that the Leafe goalkeeper dropped before it was cleared by a defender.
The second half did nothing to improve the mood of the faithful Fisher supporters. Although Fisher tried to get forward and create chances, Whyteleafe’s Ryan Fowler netted his second goal of the afternoon to put the visitor’s 3-0 up.
Whyteleafe’s Roscoe Dsane created several chances, with the aid of slow defending, but nothing came of the numerous attacks as Fisher’s defence made several last ditch tackles and blocks in an attempt to keep the scoreline down. Fish keeper Hyam then pulled off an excellent double save under pressure.
Fisher’s best attack of the second period was a long ball forward that completely missed both the goal and the attackers who had got themselves forward and into decent positions.
With the visitors on the attack again, Fish defended well but conceded a corner. Hyam made a great save but the referee had seen a push and awarded Whyteleafe a penalty. Jason Thompson stepped up and scored, putting the game to bed with nearly 20 minutes left to play.
Fisher never really looked like scoring after the goal, and Whyteleafe, who had their chances, couldn’t add to their lead in the closing stages.
