Match Preview – Fisher v Sheppey United

On Saturday we welcome last season’s Kent Invicta runners up Sheppey United. Ernie Batten’s newly promoted side have started the season well, sitting 8th in table, 4 points ahead of the Fish going into the weekend. Alongside their promotion last season, Sheppey also won the Kent Reliance Senior Trophy – so Abbo and the team will know they are in for a good game.

Sheppey kicked the season off with a 0-2 defeat at Sevenoaks Town, before registering their first Premier Division point in a 2-2 draw at home with Hollands & Blair. Back-to-back wins came at home against Whitstable Town (1-0) and away at Ashford United (1-2), before going down 0-1 at home to Corinthian. Midweek the Sheppey added a third win of the season with a 0-1 triumph on the road against Canterbury City.

Sheppey finished just 4 points behind champions Bearsted last season, putting together an impressive total of 87 points. Despite being in different leagues we did meet Sheppey United once last season, losing 1-0 at the Tiger Stadium in the Kent Reliance Senior Trophy as part of the host’s run to picking up the silverwear up.

Goalscorer in that cup game last season was Andrew Thompson, who does have a goal to his name this season too, scoring the winner midweek against Canterbury from the bench. The dynamic Timmy Babbington (pictured) must also be closely watched after a couple of goals this year, having scored 11 last season.

Turnstiles will be open at St Paul’s tomorrow from 1.45pm, ready for a 3pm kick off. The Clubhouse will be open with hot and cold drinks (still no alcohol at this stage due to further delays in the awarding of the ground management contract), the popular Fisher Super Draw will be back, and you can still save money on the cost of following the Fish by picking up a Season Ticket for just £90, and you can get involved as a Member for just £10.
