Pre-season friendly

Fisher opened their pre-season campaign in the unusual location of the Shooters Hill Sports Ground as they await Southwark Council signing off the reopening their St Pauls ground. Basildon United of the Isthmian League were the visitors and with both sides keeping the nucleus of last season’s squads the game was less disjointed than often is the case in the season’s opener.

Fisher featured a number of new faces and trialists, but it was the old guard who combined to provide the game’s only goal on fourteen minutes when from Joel Flavien-Howards corner, Jacob Katonia was on hand to finish from close range after Sam Fitzgerald had won the aerial dual to nod the ball goal wards.

The remainder of the first half saw tidy midfield play form both sides but few clear-cut chances as good approach play was at times let down by poor final passes. Chris Lockwood’s work from left back was often the source of Fisher’s more creative play and on the other flank Luke Thomas’ characteristic charges down the right also provided some good openings.

The second half saw the customary switches of personnel and it seemed as if the visitors strengthened in the process, playing with a little more pace and purpose. Whilst this pit Fisher on the back foot, an assured display from Melvin Adesida at the heart of the defence kept Basildon ay bay and their only real threat on goal saw a well struck free kick pushed round the post by a trialling goalkeeper.

Late on Fisher almost doubled their lead when a powerful half volley from Roddy Lemba struck the foot of the post. Despite late pressure the visitors could not find a way to goal, frustrated by whistle and flag on several occasions.

Whilst results are not the be all and end all of pre-season it was a pleasing win against opposition form a higher league which sets up the behind the closed doors programme well and should ensure a well drilled side will be presented to supporters one the gates are open
